Looking back
Anniversaries make for certain agonies — cloying sentimentality, too-tidy synopses, floods of word after word.
There are a few things to be said about this date a year ago — about the loss, and about the resolve. But the saying of them can't itself be the point. Today shouldn't be allowed to be overwhelmed by unceasing media coverage and reminiscence after reminiscence. We — the media, the people — should be mindful what happened, not the talking about it.
At some point, trying to say more means saying less.
