Really Unnecessary Verbiage Dept.
Much about glacial movement remains mysterious. But in simplest terms, glaciers are a varied lot, each marching to its own geophysical rhythm.
"Simplest" just doesn't mean what it used to, I guess. (From a New York Times article on the behavior of Alaskan glaciers.)
