Lonely candy hearts
Discovered, on the dogleg of a path from the house to the proper, public trail in the woods — the dogleg that, yesterday having been unseasonably warm, misled, as it too often does, some careless, clueless "hikers" astray in the woods — some 15 steps from a discarded, empty, plastic bag: one malformed, poorly printed, purple Valentine candy heart, its message barely distinguishable, its 'K' trunkless, itself abandoned. One candy heart, left, littered on the forest floor.
Perhaps it was because the message was untrue.
