"The roses are confused"

The roses are confused.

I'm not sure I blame them; a week of 60 degree weather in December in New England is really something else. I gotta admit, it doesn't feel like winter's coming this year to me, either.

Still, it was strange to see them budding and blooming today; a big, fuchsia blossom at the top of one bush that I at first mistook for some hiker wearing some high-tech sporting gear walking in the woods behind the house.

Can't they tell the days are getting shorter? The leaves have fled, the remaining birds have shed their summer colors for winter grays and browns, and there's not a bee in sight. The first frost fast approaches, and it will catch these lonely colors of false spring out in the cold.
